These easy vacation plumbing tips will help you really get away from it all!
Keep the heat on
Everyone’s looking to save money around this time of year and keeping heating costs downs, but turning off your heat while you’re away isn’t the way to do it! This can cause your home’s pipes to freeze and burst, resulting in a plumbing disaster that is sure to be a lot more expensive than your heating bill! As a precaution, keep your thermostat sitting pretty at a minimum of 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Don’t forget to look at your washing machine hoses
When was the last time you took a good look at your washing machine hoses? With an average life expectancy of about 3 years or so, they may be due for a visual inspection. During those 3 years, your hoses will experience a lot of wear and tear, and may develop potentially dangerous cracks or major calcium build up. This can cause problems while you’re away, so be sure to give us a call at the first sign of trouble!
Your water heater needs a stay-cation
A lot of water heaters nowadays are equipped with a vacation mode which allows it to use the least amount of energy possible and keeps the heating element sitting idle. Don’t have this feature on yours? Not a problem! Simply turn your hot water heater off or turn off the designated electrical breaker for an electrical hot water heater. This will prevent any kind of damage caused by frozen or burst pipes going to and from your hot water heater and also prevents the heating element from burning out if your hot water heater loses its water due to said damage!
Remember to turn off the main shut off valve
In terms of importance, this is right up there with remembering to lock your windows and doors! Shutting off your main water valve is a great way to nip the issue of frozen and burst piping right in the bud as it stops water from continuing to flow into home’s piping. As an extra precaution, you can help drain any water leftover in your hot and cold faucets by opening them. If your home has a boiler system, you can completely disregard this step. After all, water is necessary for a boiler to heat your home!
Kill drain odors
Nothing beats the feeling of coming home after vacation, but coming home to foul drain odors can be a real bummer! Kitchen waste and leftover food stuck in your sink or garbage disposal is usually the culprit. For the bathroom, residue from soap, shaving cream, and other products can can cause yucky buildup. You can prevent this from happening by giving your drains by thoroughly cleaning your drains or scheduling this service with us. Natural cleaners such as good old baking soda, vinegar, and hot water and great for cutting through grime, but bleach will also do a good job too.
