In the case of a plumbing emergency it is important for all homeowners to know how to locate and shut off their main water valve. However, many homeowners don’t even know where to start looking! Read on below to see how to locate and shut off your main water valve.
What is the main water valve?
The main water valve is exactly what it sounds like! It is the main way that water gets supplied to your home. You’ll want to be able to quickly locate and shut off this valve if a pipe breaks in your home.
Locating the main water valve
To discover your home’s main water valve, you should first ask yourself a few questions:
- Do you live in a home with a basement? If your home has a basement, usually that will be where your main water valve will be located. It will usually be located on the same wall as your hose bib on the opposite side of the wall.
- Do you live in a home that is built on a slab? If this is the case, your main water valve should be located close to your home’s water heater.
- Do you live in a home that is built on stilts (or with a crawl space)? If this is the case, your main water valve could be located underneath your home in this crawl space.
Turning off water supply
In order to turn off your main water valve, you must determine what kind of valve it is. For a gate valve, the round kind of valve, you will want to turn the valve all the way to the right to turn off the water supply. For the other type of valve, a lever or “ball” valve, you will want to turn the valve lever in a perpendicular motion.
